Rolf Structural Integration in Brief
Structural Integration was originated by Dr. Ida P. Rolf. This structural point of view concerns the organization of the body in its relationship to Gravity.
1. How the parts of the body should fit, and 2. how the body should "fit" in respect to the dictates of Gravity.
Common sense, really. Yet this idea may not seem compelling at first glance. What to do?
Since the pull of the Gravity is so constant and ever present it mostly operates out of conscious awareness. Of course, human beings live in Gravity. Structural Integration opens to the question on how we are living with Gravity. Specifically, it is a unique tool for unlocking and fostering the human design potential for order and balance in the makeup of the body in terms of the dictates of Gravity.
As one matures into adulthood the body gets bigger and stronger automatically. The arrangement of the body — how the parts fit — however, is greatly affected by life experiences and learning.
The average individual arrives at adulthood with a random pattern of imbalances showing a unique personal history of accidents and traumas, a mix of good and bad habits, and not much consciously directed teaching on how to use the body in even such basic functions as standing, sitting, and walking. We are self-taught for the most part, trial and error and modeling those around us.
Imbalances in one part of the body develop compensations in other parts. These imbalances are cause or contribute to chronic pain and stress. They limit physical performance and creative expressiveness. They take energy. As Dr. Rolf observed, the common problem is we are, “at war with Gravity”. This situation is so commonplace that it goes unnoticed and undiagnosed as such.
Rolf Structural Integration is a teaching method to bring the body to an effortlessly upright, balanced, symmetrical, unstressed stance. People of all ages, varying backgrounds, and physical ability will take away substantial lifetime benefits. Think living powerful, capable, graceful, present, responsible.
